Frederick County Local Wins Pink T-Shirt Design Contest
November 15, 2011 — Pink was the uniform of the month this October for IAFF members throughout the United States and Canada as hundreds of IAFF affiliates conducted breast cancer awareness campaigns, trading blue duty shirts for pink in support of women in the fight against all cancers. The IAFF invited affiliates to enter their pink T-shirt designs in the “Best Pink Campaign T-shirt Design Contest.” More than 75 affiliates submitted entries, and the winning T-shirt design was from Frederick County, MD Local 3666, with 2,216 votes.

November 2, 2011 — The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) Director’s Office has approved updates to the Ryan White Life Threatening Disease List and Reporting Guidelines. A provision to the Ryan White HIV/AIDS Treatment Extension Act (S.1793), passed by Congress in 2009, restored notification requirements for emergency response personnel exposed to infectious diseases while on duty.

Canadian Members Raise Three Issues With Federal Government
October 28, 2011 — The IAFF’s Canadian legislative agenda was laid out before Canada’s newly-elected Conservative majority government October 23-26 during the 18th Canadian Legislative Conference in Ottawa. A total of 127 IAFF delegates from across Canada conducted close to 120 lobby meetings with Members of Parliament (MPs) and Senators in search of support for a national Public Safety Officer Compensation (PSOC) benefit, priority access to vaccines and antivirals during an influenza pandemic and amendments to the National Building Code.
Senate Blocks Jobs Bill for Teachers, Fire Fighters
October 21, 2011 — In a 50-50 vote late last night – just 10 votes shy of the 60-vote supermajority needed to shut down the Republican filibuster against the bill – the U.S. Senate blocked the first stand-alone measure from President Obama’s jobs bill – the Teachers and First Responders Back to Work Act, , S.1723, which would have provided $35 billion in funding for public safety and education, including funding for the Staffing for Adequate Fire and Emergency Response (SAFER) grant program, which would create up to 10,000 jobs.
