Columbus firefighters soon will get new protection while in the job. It isn’t fire gear; it’s body armor. Monday night, Columbus city council voted to purchase 300 body-armor vests for the city’s firefighters. The vests would cost around $269,000 and would replace all existing body armor currently in use. Fire officials say its recommended that body armor be replaced every five years. Some of the department’s vests are 10 years old. The vests would be kept in firehouses and medic vehicles in case they’re needed. Officials say those vests that are being replaced will be destroyed so they don’t “fall into wrong hands.“
