With the recent media attention on the H1N1 flu OSHA has made a decision that will impact healthcare workers and will probably extend to first responders as well. Previously the use of the N-95 mask was optional but now OSHA is requiring it which means anyone not using it can be fined. The larger impact will be on budgets since other masks offer good protection. EMS and fire will have to absorb the cost of using the N-95 during a difficult financial period when the requirement is extended to first responders. Again it now applies to health care workers but will make its way to fire departments. You can follow developments here.
